CALL TO CONGRESS 2011 update from San Diego Advocacy Chair, Hillary Liber:

(Please note that due to hectic schedules during the Call to Congress event any updates from Hillary Liber has been compiled from multiple text and email messages and might not be complete until she returns to provide additional information or make edits. Thank you.)

Today was an exciting day meeting ADA Advocates of all ages and ethnicities from around the USA.

I am going to Capitol Hill in the morning! Meetings are set with the Health Legislative Aides for Boxer, Feinstein and Bilbray. Tomorrow I will also visit Offices of Hunter, Filner, Davis & Issa.

My Agenda:

1) Thank You for the passage of Special Diabetes Program

2) Please don’t reduce funding for health programs to fight diabetes

3) Please support $2.2 billion for NIDDK/NIH research of the $1 billion already allocated for disease prevention, please approve $80 million for Diabetes Prevention Program

4) Please prioritize prevention by increasing funding at the CDC Division of Diabetes Translation to stop diabetes epidemic

Why?  We will share our personal stories, then the stats:

1) Now 1 in 10 have diabetes. In 2050 it will be 1 in 3

2) In 2007 cost of diabetes was $227 billion and it grows every year

3) Spend 2.2 to save 227!

4) Five years ago someone was diagnosed every 21 seconds. Now it is every 17 seconds!

5) Research shows that these programs work: Ex. 58% lower incidence of type 2 for those in Diabetes Prevention Program

EVERYONE can be part of the virtual Call to Congress TOMORROW, March 10, 2011 – Call or Email your Representative today!
