Call into Congress to Advocate for ADA on March 10, 2011

Join in the fight to STOP DIABETES! We’re asking for your help on our legislative side of Advocacy at the American Diabetes Association during this weeks Call to Congress in Washington D.C.

Today, March 10th,  we will have over 200 Diabetes Advocates from around the country taking Capitol Hill by storm telling Members of Congress how essential it is that they join us in the fight to Stop Diabetes.  Along with the meetings on Capitol Hill , we will also have a national Call into Congress day today, March 10th, so that advocates across the country can support our efforts on Capitol Hill.  We need the House and Senate phones to be ringing off the hook with Diabetes Advocates.  Please call in yourself and help us spread the word about Call into Congress by encouraging your friends, family, business associates, and social network contacts to do so as well. (You can call in any day this week.)

Today, March 10, more than 200 Diabetes Advocates will be in Washington, DC to take Capitol Hill by storm.  They will be meeting with Members of Congress to make the case that diabetes research and prevention programs are critical in the fight to stop diabetes. It’s all a part of the American Diabetes Association’s Call to Congress citizen lobby day,  I need your help to ensure our collective voices are heard!With 105 million Americans living with diabetes or prediabetes right now, we don’t have a moment to waste in the fight to stop diabetes.

You know how diabetes has impacted me [ADD a short statement like “as someone whose child lives with diabetes every day” or “as a doctor/nurse who sees the ravages of this terrible disease on my patients” or “as a lawyer who has helped people with diabetes who faced discrimination”].

Our message will make a lasting impact if it’s reinforced by your call to your legislators, right now. We need to make sure the phones on Capitol Hill are ringing off the hook telling Congress that diabetes is an epidemic that cannot be ignored.  Just follow these easy steps:

–  Pick up the phone and dial 866-459-1206.

–  When prompted, enter your zip code and press “1” to confirm you’ve entered it correctly. You’ll be connected to one of your representatives’ offices.

–  When a staff person answers, ask to speak to the health aide.  Tell the health aide you are a constituent and you strongly urge your Representative/Senator to support the American Diabetes Association’s request to increase 2012 federal funding for diabetes research and prevention programs.

–  Most calls will end there, and you’ll be connected to another one of your representatives. But if you want to add more, you can remind them:

* Funding for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Diabetes Translation, and the National Diabetes Prevention Programs is essential to preventing, treating and eventually curing diabetes.

* Stopping diabetes will save taxpayers millions of dollars that would be spent on treating diabetes complications like blindness, amputations and kidney disease.

SAN DIEGO, FEBRUARY 2011 Delicious Buzz, a local Communications Agency specializing in public relations, social media and event campaigns, in partnership with LCJ Media, a local digital marketing agency specializing in mobile marketing and social media management are launching a full scale social media Case Study Campaign for the Greater San Diego Office of the American Diabetes Association (ADA SD).  The Campaign will combine innovative PR and social media strategies to boost overall involvement in ADA SD.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has 98 Chapters all over the 50 United States.  The National ADA headquarters office in Alexandria, Virginia regulates and implements everything happening locally at all of the 98 Chapters.  Social media strategies currently implemented for ADA are very minimal including basic national accounts (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).  A small amount of volunteer managed social media sites and accounts for individual Chapter offices or specific events (Step Out Walk, Tour de Cure, etc.) are available.  This is the norm for non-profits attempting to stop an epidemic under tight budgets with limited staff.

Today, nearly 26 million Americans—including more than 200,000 in the county of San Diego who have diabetes. While an estimated 17.9 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 7 million Americans are unaware that they have the disease.  If present trends continue, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that as many as 1 in 3 U.S. adults could have diabetes by 2050.
